Census Population Estimates, Vintage 2020
The final 2010-based population estimates, used to extend population history back before 2020.
Vintage 2020 is the last release of the Population Estimates Program series built on the 2010 Census. It gives July 1 population for places, counties and metropolitan areas across the 2010s. The Bureau no longer updates it; the current series begins again from the 2020 Census.
Coverage#
The files carry an April 1, 2010 estimates base and July 1 estimates for 2010 through 2020, for 19,494 incorporated places, 3,143 county-equivalents and 927 metropolitan and micropolitan areas. We take only 2010 through 2019 from this release. From 2020 onward the current release is authoritative; see Vintage 2025 population estimates.
How we use it#
This release extends population history back through the 2010s, so that measures expressed per resident can be compared across a longer span than the current series alone allows. It is reference data and produces no metric of its own.
Considerations#
The two series are based on different censuses and do not line up exactly where they meet in 2020, so a comparison spanning that join crosses a rebasing as well as a real change.
County definitions also changed in Connecticut, which replaced its eight legacy counties with nine planning regions between the two series. Those geographies do not correspond, so Connecticut has no continuous county series across the break and we leave the gap rather than assert a correspondence that the Bureau does not publish.
